Introduce Yourself (If you want)

We haven’t hit networking yet in class, but Tannebaum and Benikov both talk about its importance. Since we’re taking a summer course online and it’s awkward to interact outside of class, I thought I’d use this week to introduce myself and hopefully get to know some of you a little better. Feel free to “fill out” the survey below in a comment or just tell us who you are in your own words.

I’m a part-time 2L. I do some work for an immigration attorney and I do residential painting when I’m not at home with my two-year-old. My wife and I have a house in Sarasota, and I’d like to stay in the area if possible. Although I’m not sure what I want to practice yet, I might be interested in condo law or criminal prosecution. I don’t know if international travel is a hobby but before I finished undergrad, I did some overseas volunteer work in Nepal, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Cambodia. Although I’m not a jazz musician by any stretch, I played drums in my community college’s jazz band. My favorite songs to play were “Song for My Father” and “Chameleon.” I was truly terrible, but jazz is a lot of fun and I’d love to get better.

  2. 1. Hometown: Orlando, FL
    2. Undergrad: FSU
    3. Year in Law School (1L, 2L, 3L): Rising 4L
    4. Occupation? Paralegal
    5. What are your career goals after law school? I'll continue working in Probate/Trust Administration and Litigation with some estate planning.
    6. Do you have any hobbies/interests/experiences that you care to share? I am a jack of all trades, master of none in that I go into deep dives when I'm super interested in something, learn what I can, and then promptly stop doing it but will occasionally bring the skill set out for something. Such things include juggling, installing various car parts, crocheting, knitting, weaving, (ok, I have a fiber habit so sue me!), reading tarot, reading lenormand cards, genealogy, playing the guitar horribly, and speaking and understanding *just* enough to get me in trouble in Japanese and Spanish.
    7. What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to learn or try? Oh man, there's so many. I think next on my list of things to do would be either learning Jiu-Jitsu or playing the drums.

  3. This post is the first time one of my students has attempted networking in this way. It is an excellent idea. Not that you necessarily need to know more about me than what I stated at the beginning of the first class, but in the hope everyone else will respond, here is my contribution:

    1. Hometown: Livonia, MI (now live in Orlando)
    2. Undergrad: Wayne State University, Detroit (BA Pol Sci)
    3. Year in Law School (1L, 2L, 3L): Graduated from U of Michigan 1981
    4. Occupation? Lawyer, Adjunct Law Prof, Former Law Office Tech Consultant. Hoping to retired soon.
    5. What are your career goals after law school? I saw my future in politics, but my one run for elected office at age 30 (State Senate in Michigan) failed and I never tried again. Practicing family law has been highly rewarding because if you do it right with understanding and compassion, you can do a lot of good and make a decent living. I also taught full time for 3 years at Michigan Law and part time elsewhere for most of the rest of my career. The time commitment was tough in addition to the demansds private practice. The pay in nominal, but it has been rewarding as a way to think about the practice of law in a different way.
    6. Do you have any hobbies/interests/experiences that you care to share? Bicycling, photography, music (record/tape/CD collecting, playing in a jazz quartet), reading, and most of all these days, hanging with and looking after the grandkids.
    7. What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to learn or try? Play piano. I play bass and a little guitar, but piano has always eluded me.

  4. Hi Brice!

    1. Hometown: I grew up in Amsterdam, New York, about forty minutes outside of Albany.
    2. Undergrad: I attended the University of Tampa where I earned by bachelors in Criminal Justice and Criminology. I also minored in Speech Studies and Law, Justice & Advocacy.
    3. Year in Law School (1L, 2L, 3L): I'm a part-time student and I graduate in December, so I guess that makes me a 3L?
    4. Occupation? I am a paralegal at a boutique firm in Tampa, Shrader, Mendez & O'Connell. We primarily handle criminal defense, personal injury, business litigation and consumer protection.
    5. What are your career goals after law school? Right now I am planning to practice criminal defense, but I am still figuring out a long term plan. I would love to own my own practice someday.
    6. Do you have any hobbies/interests/experiences that you care to share? I'm a big plant person and I love baking & cooking!
    7. What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to learn or try? This is a tough one, there is definitely a ton of things I'd like to try, but I definitely want to keep expanding on my cooking and baking skills!
