How AI can benefit a law firm

It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is developing at a rapid rate. With the growth we’ve witnessed over the past few years, many people speculate which jobs will be handed over to AI, replacing the need for humans. The law profession is no different. I mean, AI has even gone on to pass the bar exam. I believe however, that instead of AI becoming a replacement for human attorneys, it can be used to assist a law firm practice.

In some instances, AI has already begun to enter some practices. The primary areas which it is being applied to include: reviewing documents for discoverable or other relevant information, legal research, document analysis, and proofreading. Essentially, what this all leads to is more efficiency. AI can be used by attorneys to save time on what would otherwise be very redundant work. Ultimately, this leads to also being more cost efficient for clients. What would normally take a human many billable hours of research, can now be done in seconds. I believe the new wave of artificial intelligence development is something positive we should look forward to in law practices. AI won’t replace the need for human attorneys, but it can definitely assist them.

  1. Axel,

I agree in that AI can be both a benefit and a detriment in the legal world. Personally, I have attempted to use AI while working at my PI firm, but I really only use it as a tool to start my research, as I don't think lawyers, or even law clerks, should rely 100% on this technology. However, when it comes to billing, I think AI can be extremely helpful as you noted that the speed it can accomplish these sorts of tasks is quicker than anything else. I think your conclusion is very accurate and I couldn't agree more. Great post, Axel!
